Tuckpointing and repointing are specifically about the mortar joints between bricks — the lines that fail first and let water in behind otherwise-sound brick. We grind out the failed mortar in courses, then tuckpoint or repoint with a color-matched mortar mix so the chimney reads correctly when finished. This is mortar work specifically — different from brick replacement and different from restoration.
We rake out the deteriorated mortar to a proper depth — not a thin smear over the surface, which fails within a season — and repack the joints with fresh mortar matched in strength, color and joint profile to your existing masonry. On older Braintree homes that means a softer lime-based mix; on post-war brick, a modern Type N or S. Matching matters: too-hard mortar on soft historic brick will crack the brick faces over time.
Repointing is the most cost-effective masonry work you can do, because catching the joints early prevents the spalling, water damage and rebuilds that follow when they’re ignored. We finish the joints cleanly so the repair blends into the original wall, and we’ll recommend waterproofing afterward to protect the fresh work.
