The smoke chamber is the transition area between the damper and the flue — rough, often unfinished masonry that historically was left unparged. Smoke-chamber parging smooths and seals that area so the chimney drafts correctly and contains heat. It’s a common fix when smoke is rolling back into the room and a frequent finding on older fireplaces.
The smoke chamber is the funnel-shaped space between the top of the firebox and the bottom of the flue. In a lot of older fireplaces it was left rough and unparged — bare, stepped masonry with corners that trap smoke instead of guiding it up the chimney.
