Missing Chimney Cap
No cap visible on top of the flue, or a rusted/dented one
Stainless and copper chase covers that keep water out of prefab and framed chimney chases.
If you have noticed rust streaks running down the chimney chase or water getting into a prefab chimney, the chase cover is usually the culprit. It is the metal top that seals a framed chimney, and a rusted or poorly sized cover is one of the most common — and most fixable — sources of water entry we see on newer South Shore homes.
A chase cover is the metal top on a prefab or framed (“chase”) chimney — the flat or sloped cover the flue pipe comes through. It is the chase-chimney equivalent of a masonry crown, and it is the part that takes all the standing water and weather. The most common problem we see is a thin galvanized cover that has rusted, leaving rust streaks down the siding and letting water into the chase.
We measure and fit a stainless steel chase cover sized to your specific chase, with the right openings and a slope that sheds water instead of holding it. Depending on what we find, we may recommend pairing it with a new cap or storm collar so the whole top is sealed. We photograph the existing condition and the finished install, and quote it in a free estimate.
