When the joints go sandy and recessed, water gets in and the structure weakens — repointing fixes it.

Mortar is the weakest link in any masonry chimney by design — it’s meant to wear before the brick does. On Braintree chimneys, decades of freeze-thaw and weather eventually leave the joints sandy, recessed or missing, which lets water in and slowly weakens the whole stack.
The fix is tuckpointing (repointing): removing the failed mortar to a proper depth and replacing it with the correct mix. Done right, it restores both the strength and the look of the chimney and disappears into the original work.
Failed joints let water into the masonry, which accelerates spalling and, left long enough, leads to a leaning or unstable stack that needs rebuilding. Repointing at the right time is the simplest repair path and heads off the rebuild it would otherwise prevent.
